Castanea Township, PA – A motor vehicle accident occurred along U.S. Route 220 near mile marker 110, shortly before 6:30 PM, resulting in injuries and one fatality. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after the collision was reported, where they discovered a two-vehicle crash that had completely blocked both lanes of travel. According to reports, a 29-year-old driver from Lock Haven was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided with another vehicle. The force of the impact sent one of the vehicles over the guardrail, with the vehicle sticking up in the air. Emergency personnel found two individuals trapped in the wreckage, prompting an extensive extrication effort. One male victim, trapped inside the vehicle for nearly an hour, required the use of the Jaws of Life and other mechanical equipment to be freed. Two medical helicopters—LifeFlight 2 and Stat MedEvac 9 from the Clearfield, PA hangar—were dispatched to the scene. A landing zone was established directly on Route 220 to accommodate the aircraft. Despite the valiant rescue efforts, the male victim succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to UPMC Lock Haven Emergency Room. The female passenger, who was reportedly pregnant and was in the vehicle with the male victim, sustained injuries and was transported to UPMC Williamsport for advanced treatment. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was transported via ground ambulance. Their condition is currently unknown. The crash is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police – Lamar Barracks. Both vehicles involved were removed from the scene by Bresslers Towing.
