BENEZETTE, Pa. — On the evening of September 20, 2025, a wildfire erupted along Winslow Hill Road in Benezette, Elk County, quickly spreading through rugged hillside terrain and thick brush. The blaze sent flames as high as 15 feet and burned through nearly two acres of forest and brush at the time of this press release, forcing a multi-agency response. Firefighters from Elkland, Clearfield, and surrounding volunteer companies joined with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to battle the fire. DCNR personnel were dispatched to assess the size and scope as the flames crossed a logging road and advanced toward the popular elk-viewing area, raising concerns for visitors and wildlife.
Flash & Sirens Witness Account
Brock Brungard, of Flash & Sirens, was in the area when he spotted the fire. Recognizing the danger, he immediately called it in and captured images of the flames as first responders rushed to the area.
Ongoing Response Crews worked into the night to contain the wildfire, using brush trucks and hand tools to cut off its advance. The terrain, steep and heavily wooded, complicated access for firefighters. Officials reported that the fire remained active into the evening, but efforts were underway to keep it from spreading further into the elk-viewing grounds.
Community Alert
Authorities urged residents and visitors to use caution in the area and remain aware of dry conditions that can quickly fuel wildfires. Winslow Hill, one of the most visited spots in Benezette for elk viewing, remains under close watch as fire crews continue suppression efforts.
